FOAL performed an ecological burn in small part of the site recently in preparation for a planting event next year.
Ecological burns are a type of land management practise that helps suppress exotic plants whilst stimulating natives as the native have evolved better fire tolerance due to long term exposure to fire. The important thing with an ecological burn is not to have the fire too hot so that it doesn’t destroy the seeds in the ground.
After the Burn we had a few birds come by to see if there was anything to snack on – Laughing Kookaburra and the Pied Butcher Bird.
We will watch and see how the land responds to the burn and perhaps use it as a regenerative tool more often.
